Capabilities

Calculate compound interest with monthly contributions, compare yearly growth and review rate, compounding and deposit-timing assumptions. Results are scenarios, not guaranteed returns.

Educational articles, the core calculator and the optional assistant support 20 languages. The advanced interactive comparison is available in English and Spanish.

  • For the same 7% APY, all frequencies give the same final amount: 10,000 × 1.07^20. Changing frequency while holding a nominal rate fixed is a different comparison. APY = (1 + r/n)^n − 1, where r is the nominal annual rate as a decimal.
  • A month-end deposit earns growth only after it arrives. Moving deposits to the beginning of each month gives each deposit one additional monthly growth period. The calculator uses an equivalent monthly yield when the compounding frequency differs; the daily model uses a 365-day year and 365/12-day monthly intervals.
  • Record the starting principal, monthly payment, nominal rate, frequency, horizon and deposit timing. Compare more than one rate assumption. A future nominal balance is not today's purchasing power. Use the separate inflation field once and review any tax assumptions; actual account terms and fees can differ.

Formulas · Accuracy & Limitations

  • Illustrative assumptions. Rates are constant; results are not a forecast.
  • Monthly contributions earn the equivalent monthly yield. Tax is applied once to positive gains at the end; fees are excluded.
  • At zero return, growth alone never doubles the principal. A fixed negative return has no positive doubling time. Variable market returns and deposits or withdrawals need a cash-flow model; an arithmetic average does not describe the sequence of returns.
  • The shortcut can illustrate a constant inflation assumption, but it cannot predict future prices. Keep nominal and inflation-adjusted amounts separate and apply an inflation adjustment only once.

A = P(1+r/n)^(nt); APY = (1+r/n)^n − 1
